Job Title: Park Maintenance Worker I

The park maintenance worker I is responsible for performing a variety of park labor duties to maintain and/or repair park properties and equipment.

The park maintenance worker is responsible for performing the essential functions as outlined in this analysis. He/she is a full-time hourly employee, working 40 hours per week, but will be required to work additional hours including nights and weekends as required by the District.

Qualifications:

A High School Diploma or G.E.D., and at least three years experience in a field related to park district maintenance is preferred. The park maintenance worker should possess good composition and oral communication skills. The park maintenance worker must obtain a State of Illinois Pesticide Operators license within one year of his/her employment.

The park maintenance worker must possess a valid Illinois class “D” driver’s license and maintain an adequate driving record.

Immediate Supervisor: The park maintenance worker is under the supervision of the Superintendent of Parks.

Essential Functions:

  1. Operation of park district vehicles and equipment as directed and trained.
  2. General repair of all park district equipment and areas.
  3. Turf Maintenance- all aspects (i.e. mowing, fertilizing, seeding, aerating).
  4. Planting trees and shrubs.
  5. Trimming of trees and shrubs.
  6. Maintenance of playgrounds and sports fields.
  7. Removing all garbage from facilities, parks and playgrounds.
  8. Snow removal.
  9. Flower bed planting and maintenance.
  10. Maintains proper appearance and cleanliness of all facilities.

Marginal Functions:

  1. Making and maintaining ice rinks.
  2. Assisting with construction of park and playground equipment.
  3. Assisting with the repair of park buildings, roofs, doors, windows, and electrical or plumbing work.
  4. Assists with other duties and directed by supervisors.

Psychological Considerations:

  1. The park maintenance worker must be able to work alone or closely with others.
  2. The park maintenance worker must be able to work around general population/park patrons in public areas.
  3. The park maintenance worker must work under the direction of superiors.

Physiological Considerations:

The park maintenance worker is exposed to chemicals, fertilizers, and cleaning agents. He/she must be able to lift and move 100 lb. with mechanical assistance.

Environmental Consideration:

  1. The park maintenance worker is exposed to outside weather conditions 90% of the time, including extreme heat and cold, snow, rain, ice, and high levels of pollen.

  2. Protective clothing required for job duties include: -ear protection -helmet -eye protection -dusk mask -leather type work boot -gloves

Cognitive Considerations:

  1. The park maintenance worker must be able to follow directions from a supervisor with safe follow through.
  2. The park maintenance worker must use good safety awareness and judgment.
  3. The park maintenance worker must be able to read specifications and instructions.
