Position: Stables Assistant Manager/Trainer
Under the general direction of the Trainer/Barn Manager, the Assistant Manager/Trainer is responsible for assisting with the overall operations of the Palatine Stables; lesson program management, part-time staff supervision and care of horses. This is a full time, exempt position with a comprehensive benefit package.
The Assistant Manager/Trainer duties include the daily care and maintenance of Park District owned horses and ponies and boarded horses. Assist with teaching and training of all students and their horses, including boarders advancing within the Riding School program. Assist with scheduling and maintenance of the lesson programs for the Riding School. Schedule part-time staff required for lessons, pony rides, pony parties and summer camp. Schedule, organize and manage the in-house Student Horse Shows. Maintain appropriate records pertaining to horse health, farrier services and all other a la carte services provided by the Stables. Work week will consist of Monday – Thursday day & evening shifts and Saturday days.
Qualifications and Experience Minimum five (5) years of progressive experience and knowledge or equivalent experience of the equine industry, stable operations, knowledge of daily horse care, behaviors and health. Required to have basic veterinary skills and knowledge including: wound care, injections, bandaging techniques and medication. Strong supervisory skills for part-time staff required. Must possess the ability to work harmoniously and maintain effective relationships with fellow employees, patrons, and community groups. Ability to multi-task, troubleshoot, meet deadlines and effectively communicate, both verbal and written. Proficient in Microsoft Office products; experience with RecTrac and Time pro preferred. Some bilingual skills in Spanish preferred.
Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions Ability to lift 50 pounds in materials, equipment and supplies. Standing and walking for long periods of time. General work area is outdoors and indoors with un-controlled temperature and fluorescent lighting. Working conditions in the barn and arenas can be dusty, dirty and smelly. Work very close to large, live animals. Work around uneven ground, fencing and terrain. Frequent exposure to natural and varied weather conditions while supervising employees or attending job related activities.
