NSSRA provides and facilitates year-round recreation and leisure opportunities for children, teens and adults with disabilities. The agency was formed in 1970 as an extension of ten park districts, two cities and one village in the northern suburbs of Chicago. NSSRA has been creating an environment of belonging through play for over 45 years, and has the distinction of being the first Special Recreation Association in the country. Services provided include traditional programs, inclusion services, cooperative programs, summer camp, special events, overnight trips, Gator Athletics/Special Olympics and more. NSSRA is seeking motivated, team-oriented, creative and enthusiastic individuals to join our full-time team. We are recruiting two Recreation Specialists to coordinate the following areas: Inclusion Observations/Behavior Management and Adult Programs.

Job Purpose: To plan, implement and evaluate programs for people with disabilities within the assigned program area, as well as other seasonal activities. Responsibilities include program creation, budgeting, staffing, training, report writing and communication specific to program area. Ongoing involvement in agency programming, special events and supporting all efforts of the team.

Summary of Duties: Coordinate the planning, implementation and evaluation of programs in assigned area and other projects. Lead ongoing seasonal programs, special events and overnight trips on weekdays, evenings and weekends as assigned. Work with Recreation Managers to complete and maintain all reports, files and paperwork necessary in the program area. Assist in recruiting, hiring, training and supervising part-time recreation employees and volunteers. Conduct orientations and trainings for agency employees and partner agencies. Develop, implement, evaluate behavior plans and assist the Recreation Managers in conducting observations of participants and programs as requested. Support the team in problem solving related to programs and participants. Develop and maintain community relations. Attend meetings, in-service trainings, conferences and professional development opportunities and conduct related educational sessions as necessary.

Qualifications: Graduate from accredited college or university with a BA/BS in Therapeutic Recreation or related field. Must have an ability to develop and implement recreation activities for people with a wide range of ages and abilities. Must demonstrate enthusiasm, independence and possess the ability to work effectively in a team atmosphere and communicate with people with disabilities, co-workers, partner agency staff, parents, educators, board of directors, vendors and community individuals. Ability to create and maintain a team approach in accomplishing the goals of the agency is a must. Is a current CTRS or has the ability to obtain the NCTRC (National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification) or comparable certification within one (1) year of employment is preferred.
