Forest Preserve District of Cook County

Job Summary

Under minimum supervision, performs a variety of skilled tasks involving manual labor and the use of hand and mechanical tools and equipment to provide a high level of proficiency in the maintenance, repair, and construction and servicing of District grounds and properties. Operates and/or performs maintenance on a variety of light and heavy vehicles and other motorized or mechanical equipment, such as trucks, tractors, bulldozers, riding mowers, salt spreaders, trailers, and other devices. Transports heavy equipment and vehicles. Inspects and dispatches District Vehicles and equipment. Ensures the proper and safe usage and maintenance of District vehicles and equipment.

Typical Duties

Performs a variety of duties requiring various levels of skill in performing and assisting others with maintenance operations and tasks.

Operates and performs maintenance on a variety of small trucks, tractors, riding mowers, pickup trucks, one ton dump trucks, weed eaters, hand mowers, chainsaws, snow blowers, leaf blowers, trailers, salt spreaders, fire tanks and pumps, and other various equipment. Assist in patching asphalt, concrete, or stone screening walkways. May operate a snorkel for tree trimming and removal.

Ability to operate concrete/asphalt walk behind saw.

Drives to various District locations throughout Cook County on a regular basis.

Performs manual labor using hand or power tools.

Performs minor welding repairs on equipment.

Instructs and/or directs others in team projects.

Performs assignments related to the use of garbage trucks and pickup trucks.

Transports equipment and vehicles.

Assists in patching concrete walks, steps and other facilities that require renovation.

Operates grass mowers; repairs fences; builds or repairs picnic tables, etc.

Performs janitorial duties and other housekeeping duties.

Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of equipment, job site and other areas.

Exercises judgment, skill and discretion in the performance of duties and problem solving.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years or older.

Must be a current Cook County resident.

Must possess one (1) or more years of full-time work experience in the operation and maintenance of landscaping tools, equipment, industrial vehicles.

Must possess a current valid Class B or higher Commercial Driver’s License with no Air Brake restrictions.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

Skill in the safe and effective use and application of a wide variety of tools and equipment as characterized herein and/or applicable to area of assignment.

Ability to repair construction activities involving sewers, pavement, curbs, guardrail, etc.

Ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively.

Ability to explain and demonstrate the effective use of methods and techniques to others.

Ability to learn and apply new methods and techniques relative to servicing equipment.

Ability to lead and/or direct others.

Ability to perform manual labor in connection with assigned duties.

Skill in transporting of vehicles and equipment.

Ability to manually load and unload a variety of material and supplies.

Ability to deal with public in a courteous manner.

Ability and willingness to work in an outdoor environment, including inclement weather.

Position requires various types of physical exertion including, but not limited to climbing, lifting, pulling, and pushing and moving objects of up to fifty (50) pounds.

Coast Guard members must submit a certified copy of the military separation from either the Department of Transportation (before 911) or the Department of Homeland Security (after 911).
