Education: At a minimum, High School diploma or equivalent (GED). Prefer an Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Turf Management, Horticulture or a related field.
Experience: Two to three years experience in performing skilled and semi-skilled ball field and landscape maintenance tasks, or education/training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certifications: Must possess a valid Illinois Drivers' License and be able to obtain within six (6) months of employment a class "B" CDL (Commercial Driver License). Must obtain and keep current a Pesticide Applicator or Operator License within six (6) months of employment. Must be able to obtain and keep current CPR and AED certifications. Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical and drug test.
Other Qualifications: Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Must possess strong communication skills and have the ability to effectively work with, lead and motivate others.
Acts as a crew leader and has responsibility for the condition of all assigned athletic field areas.
Trains, supervises, and monitors the work of assigned staff. Creates field maintenance schedules including weekend schedules.
Inspects athletic areas on a regular basis and maintains inspection records. Performs ball field audits and keeps inspection and maintenance records.
Grooms, waters, lines, and maintains all ball field infields.
Inspects fields to insure smooth and hazard free dirt and turf playing fields.
Lays out fields to proper dimensions and accurately lines soccer and football fields.
Installs bases, pegs, foul poles, and other sports equipment.
Performs repairs to turf, infield/outfield edges.
Performs repairs to benches, fencing and back stop areas.
Performs preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.
Performs renovation and repair of fields including regrading infields, adding and replenishing infield mix, top dressing, replacing turf and other horticultural practices necessary to maintain ball fields.
Responsible for "detailing" each athletic area on game days so that athletic area is in excellent condition.
Applies pesticide applications as needed; documents applications.
Maintains inventory and has custody of tools, equipment, and supplies.
Responsible for operating heavy equipment such as backhoes and loaders.
Orders materials and supplies; contacts vendors.
Responsible for snow removal including plowing , snow blowing, plowing, shoveling, salting walkways and parking lots. May act as "Crew Chief" during snow removal operations.
During winter months, assists the Parks Department staff with duties that may include pruning, mulching, painting, garbage removal, park clean-up and other duties as assigned by the Parks Supervisor.
As requested, assists the Turf Specialist with turf repairs, sodding and seeding at various park locations.
Utilizes standards set forth in the Park Operations Manual for all work.
As assigned, acts as crew leader during special events.
May be called on to report to work on an on-call basis for emergencies or as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
