The Community House is excited to offer a professional internship to students working toward a degree within the field of parks and recreation. This internship opportunity runs 8-13 consecutive weeks and usually starts a few weeks before the start of our summer programs. Under the supervision and guidance of the Program Director and The Community House Recreation Supervisors, the Recreation intern will have the opportunity to expand their education. Interns are exposed to all areas of operations, from administration, budgeting, leadership, staff management, programming, special events, and facility/maintenance. Students will be provided the opportunity to integrate and apply knowledge, to the following programs: Summer Day Camps, Leagues, Sports Camps, Art Programming, Special Events, Enrichment Camps, and Active Adult/Senior Programs.

Duties:

• Work in areas of program development, written and oral communication, budgeting, training/management of employees, evaluation of both programs & personnel, marketing and special events.

• Experience registration software processes, financial reporting and brochure proofing.

• Gain direct leadership experience by conducting programs and special events.

• Plans, prepares and participates in recreation programs and special events.

• Assists with the planning, set-up, execution and tear down of special events.

• Responsible for the well-being, safety and care of children and youth attending programs.

• Responsible for creating a fun and energetic environment for the program participants on a daily basis.

• Work in a team-based environment supporting the Recreation Team.

• Interact with guests, parents, and participants in a positive and professional manner, utilizing excellent guest service standards.

• Maintain professional attitudes and relationships with parents, participants, and co-workers.

• Adhere to The Community House rules and regulations including proper attire, safety procedures, and overall professionalism.

• Participate in safety training and respond to emergencies in an appropriate manner.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

• Be currently enrolled, or a recent graduate of a university or junior college pursuing or having completed a degree in Parks & Recreation, Youth Programming, Sports Management or similar field.

• To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

• Must be able to respectfully and effectively communicate with fellow staff, program participants, and facility users of all ages.

• Must have current CPR / AED and First Aid certification by hire date or be able to attend The Community House training to become certified).

Hours:

Intern hours will vary, depending on the weekly activities and special events; however, the Intern will work approximately 25-40 hours per week, including nights and weekends when needed. The schedule is usually Monday through Friday but may vary, depending on the weekly activities and special events.

The Geneva Park District is seeking a highly motivated individual eager to learn with a focus in program and facility management within the recreation field. The Recreation Department is responsible for a variety of programs, facilities, services, and special events in the community.
 
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Under the direct supervision of the Aquatics & Facility Manager, this unique opportunity will offer the intern a chance to work closely with our recreation supervisors and facility managers, learn about program/facility management and administration and work on projects within our recreation department. The areas of focus include: Athletics, Before and After School Care, Summer Camp, Dance, Aquatics, Fitness Center Operations, Mini-Golf and Peck Farm Park. The Recreation Intern should be an energetic student who is enthusiastic about the field of parks and recreation, creative, mature and eager to learn. The summer Recreation Intern program is an 8-12-week position that works with a qualified, well-rounded team of recreation professionals.

This intern will work closely with recreation supervisors and facility managers to gain experience in planning, executing, evaluating, staffing and management of multiple recreation programs and facilities. Learn to communicate effectively with patrons and staff, while demonstrating support of the park district customer service standards. Learn the nuances of staffing, scheduling and managing part-time staff. Gain insight and behind the scenes access to our recreation programming and facilities. Assist with special events.

QUALIFICATIONS
Intern candidates must be enrolled in a current accredited university, pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in recreation, leisure services, facility management, or related field of interest. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and provide their own transportation and housing. Students should demonstrate knowledge of community recreational programming; exceptional customer service and leadership skills; good judgment, initiative, flexibility, and creativity. Must be able to work independently in day-to-day operations with general supervision and communicate effectively with the public, patrons, and co-workers.

Qualifications:                                              
  • Pursuing Associates degree, Bachelor's degree preferred in Therapeutic Recreation or a related field.  Related experience will be considered.
  • Knowledge and ability to plan, supervise and evaluate recreation programs and special events for persons with disabilities.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Pre-employment physical including drug and alcohol test required.
 
 Duties:                                                          
  •  To supervise, plan and evaluate weekly programs, day camps, cooperative programs and special events as assigned by the Intern Supervisor.
  •  To assist with the inclusion process as well as work some inclusions. 
  •  To assist in the selection of programs to be offered each season.
  •  To involve participants in the program planning process.
  •  To act upon requests, suggestions by participants and parents concerning recreation services.
  •  To assist in orientations and training of seasonal staff and volunteers.
  •  To prepare budget estimates, routine, and special reports for the Superintendent.
  •  To prepare program information for flyers, brochures, and news releases.
  •  To participate in agency fundraising events and public relations activities.
