Park Specialist performs a variety of park maintenance and park improvements or developments in turf, horticulture, custodial and recreation support operations.
The Park Specialist is responsible for performing the essential functions as outlined in this analysis. Park specialist is a full-time year round employee, who may be required to work additional hours and weekends in order to complete essential duties and assist with special events. Work pace varies depending on the task required. The position of Park specialist may perform duties in the medium heavy work level (lifting 75 lbs. infrequently).
Qualifications: • Must be 18 years of age or older • High School diploma or equivalent. • Prefer 1-2 yrs. experience in related field (preferably park maintenance). • Valid IL Driver’s license • Working skills in the operation of tractors, commercial lawn mowers, and truck and trailer • Ability to read, write and effectively communicate in English.
Immediate Supervisor: Park Specialist is under the direction of Superintendent of Parks and Facilities.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: 1. Performs skilled labor in connection with the maintenance, construction, and development of parks, open space, building, structures, roads, paths, parking lots, landscaping, ball fields and special facilities. 2. Perform daily custodial duties for all facilities, including pools 3. Operates and maintains lawn mowers on a daily basis and a maintains a mowing log 4. Responsible for performing preventive maintenance and repairs on park equipment 5. Operates district owned equipment, tractors, and other equipment used in turf cutting, turf maintenance, tiling, ditch digging, snow removal, material transport, and such other tasks as require special or heavy equipment. 6. Operates small power hand tools and mowers. 7. Assists with the care and planting of, trees, shrubs and flowers. 8. Assists with the installation and maintenance of ball diamonds, play equipment, etc. 9. Adheres to park district safety rules and procedures and directs subordinates to exercise safe work practices.. 10. Other related duties as assigned.
Psychological Considerations: Work closely with co-workers, work around general public, and work with little to no supervision.
Physiological Considerations: Exposure to cleaning materials, fertilizers, pool (hazardous) chemicals, dust, fumes, direct, noise, and insect bites.
Environmental Considerations: Most work is performed outdoors including exposure to extreme heat, cold, rain snow. Protective clothing is required and must be worn. Prolonged lifting, stooping, bending, twisting, and climbing for extended periods of time. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. without assistance. The position of Park Specialist may perform duties in the medium heavy work level.
Cognitive Considerations: Must be able to follow directions. Must use good safety awareness and judgment.
