Position: Full time with benefits

Work Schedule: 40 hours per week, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Job Description:

The Natural Areas Crew Chief is responsible for the restoration, maintenance and management activities of the Township’s Open Space parcels, natural areas, trails, equipment, and park.

Specific Duties:

Felling, climbing, bucking, and chipping trees.

Assist with volunteer workdays and community projects.

Assist with preparation and execution of prescribed burns.

Control of invasive plants through chemical and mechanical means.

Handle, mix, load, and dispense herbicide.

Maintain accurate records of herbicide applications.

Landscape maintenance including mowing, edging, and trimming.

Operate heavy equipment including skid loaders, tractors, rollers, UTV’s, and z-turn mowers.

Drive dump trucks and full-size pickup trucks.

Serve as field lead with Natural Areas Resource Technician(s).

Perform shop and/or equipment maintenance.

Prairie, wetland, and woodland restoration.

Trail maintenance.

May work independent of supervisory staff at various sites to complete management objectives

and assigned tasks.

Other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and/or Township Supervisor.

Requirements:

Must have a valid driver’s license.

Must have a reliable means of transportation.

Must be willing and able to work outdoors in a physically demanding environment.

Must have excellent safety awareness and judgement.

Must have a positive attitude and willing to accept and follow directions.

Experience with power equipment such as weed whackers, blowers, and chainsaws preferred.

Identification skills for native and non-native plant species of the Chicagoland areas desirable.

Requires heaving lifting, bending, twisting, walking, etc. for long periods of time.

Current Illinois Department of Agriculture herbicide license or obtain license within 90 days of employment.

Proof of prescribe burn training S130, S190 certification or equivalent or ability to obtain certification within 1 year of employment.

Must obtain IDOT Class A CDL within 6 months of employment.

Mandatory drug testing for CDL.

Ability to work extended hours or hours outside of normal working hours to facilitate

prescribed burn season, storm damage operations, special events or other unforeseen

occurrences related to the function of the position.

Required Associates Degree in forestry, horticulture, or related area. Bachelor of Science in

forestry, park management, horticulture or related area preferred.

Position will report directly to Natural Areas Manager.
