Chief Naturalist
JOB OPENING: CHIEF NATURALIST POSITION: FULL TIME
Starting salary range: $54,000 - $60,000 annually based on qualifications & experience.

OVERVIEW
Under the immediate supervision of the Supervisor of Environmental and Interpretive Services, the Chief Naturalist is responsible for a number of specific tasks as outlined below.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate facility leadership and staff.
• Oversee interpretive/environmental programming, trail maintenance and upkeep, and maintenance of associated grounds with Peoria Park District personnel, volunteers, area educators, conservation organizations and other interested groups to include tours, workshops, classes, and social events.
• Work with the Supervisor of Environmental and Interpretive Services to coordinate regional partnerships to enhance local ecological restoration efforts.
• Support the work of the District’s Land Steward as needed to maintain and manage environmental assets.
• Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers in coordination with the Peoria Park District’s Volunteer Department.
• Coordinate grant writing efforts to help fund various aspects of operations.
• Budget, complete various reports, submit payroll, and monitor financial performance of both the Nature Center and assigned ancillary operations.
• Perform various public relations duties as needed to promote programming and initiatives of Environmental and Interpretive Services.
• Keep abreast of current trends in interpretation and environmental education and resources management techniques.
• Obtain and keep a current valid Illinois State Driver’s License in the appropriate classification as required by law.
• Follow all safety procedures that pertain to the duties performed.
• Support all aspects of the Peoria Park District’s safety program.
• Perform all other duties as assigned
SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE
• Four-year degree in biological science, environmental education, or other closely related field. Although a degree is preferred, extensive experience in a like position with similar duties and responsibilities may be substituted for part of the educational requirement.
• Five years or more of progressive and responsible experience as an interpretive naturalist. Two years of supervisory experience is highly desirable.
• An understanding of interpretation, theory, and practice of a sound environmental/education program and the ability to convey that information to the public.
• Knowledge of local flora and fauna.
• Thorough understanding of ecology and restoration needs and practices, as well as Nature Preserve ordinances and management techniques.
• Knowledge of habitat restoration, museum display, and trail construction and upkeep.
• Extensive knowledge of effective supervisory practices as they relate to personnel, financial, and program/facilities management.
• Ability to formulate budgets and maintain operations within the confines of existing budgetary allowances.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, along with knowledge of grant writing and fundraising techniques.
• Ability to balance maximum public access with minimal damage to natural areas, with special attention to the impact upon wildlife and habitat.
• Ability to work harmoniously with the public and fellow employees in an enthusiastic and cooperative manner.
• Ability to serve in a liaison capacity with community, educational, and special interest groups.
