SUMMARY
Park Maintenance I position is responsible for general park maintenance and repair including all turf and landscape maintenance, athletic fields, playgrounds, outdoor facility maintenance and special event support and safety inspections. 
 
QUALIFICATIONS
A high school degree and a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a similar position is preferred.  A valid Illinois State Drivers License (class C) is required, with safe driving record.  
  • A Valid Illinois Pesticide Operators License is required within six months of hire.
  • CPR and AED Certification required within six months of employment.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Job Functions
 
1.      Operate Park District trucks, tractors, mowers, blowers, trimmers, tractors, overseeders, chain saws, bed edger, hand and power tools.
2.      Building and restroom cleaning.
3.      Refuse and garbage removal for parks and playgrounds.
4.      Provide for turf care in parks - seeding, fertilization and aeration.
5.      Mow, edge and trim parks, blow off paved surfaces upon completion.
6.      Provide tree and shrub care in parks including trimming/pruning, removal, planting, removal of dead and broken branches and chipping limbs for disposal.
7.      Apply pesticides for weed control.
8.      Lay-out and line sports fields.
9.      Maintain path surfaces with chips and asphalt patch, etc.
10.  Provide for snow and ice removal from paths, walks, drives.
11.  Work special events as assigned.
12.  Repair and/or paint park equipment, playgrounds, facilities, signs, asphalt, and District property.
13.  Make and maintain ice rinks.
14.  Recycle appropriate materials.
15.  Responsible for upkeep of Park District equipment and tools.
16.  Able to respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day and work on weekends when on call.
17.  Identify and notify supervisors of hazards in parks.
18.  Perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the District’s Risk Management Policy.
19.  Develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers through oral and written communications.  Respond to internal and external phone calls, e-mails, comments and suggestions in a timely manner.  Promote District to patrons, guests and staff.
20.  Other duties as assigned.
 
SAFETY AND RISK MANAGEMENT
 
1.      Maintains a working knowledge of all general agency and departmental‑specific safety rules.
2.      Uses material handling equipment or staff assistance when lifting and or moving objects 50 pounds or heavier.
3.      Reports any work-related or patron injuries to supervisor promptly, same day the injury occurs and before leaving work for the day.
4.      Attends required safety program and in‑service education meetings.
5.      Corrects unsafe conditions and/or reports them to supervisor. 
 
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
 
  1. Worker is exposed to outside weather conditions with moderate noise level 90% of the time, including extreme heat and cold, snow, rain and ice.
  2. Protective clothing (provided by Park District) is required including earplugs, safety glasses/goggles, helmets, chaps, steel toe boots, protective gloves and overalls.
