JOB STATUS: Full time       DIVISION: Parks and Properties       FSLA STATUS: Non-Exempt    JOB LOCATION: Heritage Oaks Golf Maintenance 

The Northbrook Park District is seeking an individual with skilled mechanical work involving the maintenance, repair, modification and/or fabrication of vehicles and equipment used in the Park District. This position is primarily assigned to oversee equipment maintenance for golf operations at Heritage Oaks Golf Club and Anetsberger Golf Course. Provides coverage and support for Parks Fleet equipment as needed.

Essential Job Duties
  • Responsible for executing daily maintenance and repairs on golf course equipment.
  • Works closely and coordinates with the golf leadership team and supervisor on any issues related to golf course equipment or performance of golf course equipment.
  • Repairs equipment such as tractors, mowers and other specialized equipment used in building, grounds, and golf maintenance; repairs and/or replaces motors, engines, transmissions, brakes, and carburetors; performs electrical and hydraulic systems repairs.
  • Tunes engines and performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment; checks systems, changes oil, greases moving parts, checks fluid levels, replaces filters, changes tires, makes brake and clutch adjustments; performs related activities for the prevention, detection, and correction of existing and potential mechanical problems; adjusts cutting heights on mowing equipment and sharpens blades.
  • Creates and follows a schedule of preventive maintenance for all equipment to coordinate completion of maintenance, when possible, during winter months/off-season for golf operations.
  • Locates, prices, and orders parts and supplies needed for the maintenance of equipment within budget allotment.
  • Purchases and controls inventory of equipment parts and supplies.
  • Communicates equipment maintenance needs with supervisor.
  • Assists in the instruction and training of the maintenance workers regarding preventative maintenance, proper cleaning, and safe operation of equipment.
  • Performs major repair projects such as engine overhaul, body work and transmission repairs.
  • Cuts, grinds, welds, and fabricates metal to fit repair assignments; performs minor body work as needed.
  • Operates specialized grinding and sharpening equipment for maintenance of reel and rotary mowers.
  • Maintains records for vehicles and equipment including routine maintenance and major repairs using a asset management software.
  • Operates snowplows, trucks, and other equipment for the removal of snow from park district roads, parking lots and walkways during golf off-season.
  • Report any work-related or patron injuries or incidents to supervisor; report unsafe conditions to supervisor and correct if appropriate; complete incident/accident report forms as needed.
  • Assists and fills in for Parks Mechanic as needed.
  • Perform all job tasks in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Completion of four (4) years of high school, including or supplemented by three (3) years of experience in maintenance and repair of the equipment used in ground maintenance; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability, and skills.
 
Knowledge
  • Tools, equipment, and materials used in vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Occupational hazards and precautionary measures.
  • Hydraulic and electrical systems found on maintenance equipment.

Skills & Abilities
  • Use, operation, and care of tools and equipment utilized in grounds and golf maintenance.
  • Perform skilled maintenance and repair of diverse vehicles and equipment including gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Must posses skill in diagnosing and locating problems and defects in mechanical parts and equipment and be able to adjust, repair or replace the equipment or vehicle
  • Ability to read and follow manuals, operating instructions, wiring diagrams, installation, and adjustment procedures by equipment manufacturers.
  • Cut, weld, grind, and fabricate parts as needed for repair assignments.
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Valid Illinois Driver's License Required
  • Drive trucks and operation of all equipment.
  • CPR and AED certified.
Compensation and Hours
$28.00 - $37.40 per hour
Monday - Friday 5:30 am - 1:30 pm

  • Frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee works around heavy machinery and may be exposed to risk of electrical shock.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to and more than 50 pounds, over 50 lbs with assistance.
  • Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate equipment.
 
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor setting. Work may be performed outdoors with exposure to warm and/or cold temperatures and/or icy conditions for short or long periods of time. May be exposed to high noise levels, fumes, dust, or odors (such as paint), uneven ground or varying heights (use of a ladder). Works near or operates heavy machinery and/or equipment with moving mechanical parts. Work related tools will be provided.
