Grounds Maintenance II - FT
Under the direct supervision of the Parks and Grounds Operations Supervisor, Grounds Maintenance II is responsible for the care of turf, ornamentals, trees, sports fields, general park upkeep, skilled and semi-skilled tasks, and any other task assigned by the Grounds Operations Supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience/Education – High school graduate or GED as a minimum requirement with 1-2 years public grounds maintenance experience or related landscaping field.
- Skills/Competencies – Intermediate knowledge of park maintenance equipment use is essential. Must be willing to learn various turf, horticultural, and sport field practices. Has read and understands the safety rules and regulations in the Parks Department Employee Manual. With adequate training, the Grounds Maintenance II should be able to operate all tractors, tractor implements, dump trucks, pickup trucks, plow vehicles, riding mowers, tractor mower, push mowers, string trimmers and landscape equipment. Should possess the physical ability to carry out assigned duties. Must possess basic computer skills.
- Certifications – Must have a valid driver’s license. Must also obtain an Illinois Pesticide Applicator's License within one year of being hired. First aid, CPR and AED certification is required within 90 days of hire and must be maintained.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
- Carries out tasks assigned by the Parks and Grounds Operations Supervisor or assigned team leader in a safe and timely manner.
- Safe operation and maintenance of vehicles, trailers, and equipment.
- Performs daily inspections on vehicles and equipment in use.
- Inspection and reporting of unsafe conditions.
- Removal of garbage and litter from park areas.
- Performs routine landscape work such as mowing, string trimming, sidewalk edging, planting, pruning, weeding and raking.
- Installation, pruning, and removal of trees with acceptable cultural practices.
- Mow turf operating various tractors and equipment, with safety always in mind.
- Acts as crew leader when assigned, and is responsible for fulltime, part-time or seasonal employees assigned to their crew.
- Performs all tasks necessary to assure a safe environment at all park district facilities.
- Cleans washrooms and facilities when assigned.
- Inspects and repairs playground equipment when assigned.
- Paints picnic tables, garbage cans, signs, buildings, and playground equipment when assigned.
- Removes snow from parking lots, sidewalks and circulation paths with various snow removal equipment and up to and including snow plows.
- Setup, maintain, and takedown of ice rinks and sled hill when weather permits.
- Works on soccer/baseball fields when assigned.
- Performs maintenance and repair on asphalt, stone, and woodchip trails.
- Assists with setup, tear-down and the operation of district programing and special events.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Obtains training and certification where necessary.
- Works cooperatively with fellow staff and general public.
- Works weekends, evenings or holidays when assigned.
- Ability to work in a variety of extreme weather conditions.
- Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Dresses appropriately in uniform and acts professional at all times.
- Complete work orders in a timely manner.
- Completes logging of daily work in MainTrac.

- Full-Time, Hourly position.
Compensation
- Starting Hourly Range: $19.00 – $21.00. Starting payrate is commensurate with experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
