PARK TECHNICIAN I
Starting Hourly Range: $18.00-$20.00
We are seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a Park Technician I. This full-time, hourly position is responsible for maintaining turf, ornamentals, trees, sports fields, and general park upkeep. The role involves performing both skilled and semi-skilled tasks, and completing any other duties assigned by the Parks Foreman or designated team leader.
Key Responsibilities:
- Carry out tasks assigned by the Parks Foreman or team leader in a safe and timely manner.
- Safely operate and maintain vehicles, trailers, and equipment.
- Perform daily inspections on vehicles and equipment in use.
- Inspect and report unsafe conditions.
- Remove garbage and litter from park areas.
- Perform routine landscape work including mowing, string trimming, sidewalk edging, planting, pruning, weeding, and raking.
- Install, prune, and remove trees following accepted cultural practices.
- Mow turf using various tractors and equipment, ensuring safety at all times.
- Act as crew leader when assigned, overseeing full-time, part-time, or seasonal employees.
- Ensure a safe environment at all park district facilities.
- Clean washrooms and facilities when assigned.
- Inspect and repair playground equipment when assigned.
- Paint picnic tables, garbage cans, signs, buildings, and playground equipment as needed.
- Remove snow from parking lots, sidewalks, and paths using snow removal equipment, including snowplows.
- Set up, maintain, and take down ice rinks and sled hills when weather permits.
- Maintain soccer and baseball fields as assigned.
- Perform maintenance and repair on asphalt, stone, and woodchip trails.
- Assist with setup, teardown, and operation of district programming and special events.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
- Obtain training and certification where necessary.
- Work cooperatively with staff and the general public.
- Available to work weekends, evenings, or holidays when assigned.
- Capable of working in extreme weather conditions.
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Dress in uniform and maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
- Complete work orders promptly.
Work Environment:
- Exposure to outdoor weather conditions 90% of the time, including extreme heat, cold, snow, rain, and ice.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or two years of experience in a field related to park district maintenance.
- Basic knowledge of grounds maintenance and supervisory skills.
- Intermediate knowledge of park maintenance equipment.
- Basic computer skills and physical ability to perform assigned duties.
- Valid Illinois State Driver’s License.
- Illinois Pesticide Applicator’s License (to be obtained within one year of hire).
- First Aid, CPR, and AED certification (to be obtained within 90 days of hire and maintained).
