Horticulturist
The Niles Park District is seeking a passionate and skilled Horticulturist to join our team full-time. Under the guidance of the Superintendent of Grounds, the Horticulturist will play a key role in enhancing the beauty and health of the District's parks and facilities by overseeing the design, planting, and maintenance of landscaped areas.
Key Responsibilities
- Landscape Management: Plan, coordinate, and execute the planting, care, and maintenance of flower beds, shrubs, and planters across District parks and facilities.
- Creative Design: Develop innovative and visually appealing layouts for flower beds and other landscaped areas.
- Plant Care: Monitor and manage the health of plants, addressing issues such as weed control, diseases, fungi, and pests.
- Team Leadership: Assist the Superintendent in, training, and supervising part-time staff to ensure high-quality work and a positive team environment.
- Budget Collaboration: Provide input during the budgeting process and make recommendations for future projects, equipment needs, and schedules.
- General Maintenance: Participate in general park upkeep, support special events, and contribute to snow removal efforts during the winter season.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Perform repetitive tasks such as digging, planting, weeding, and pruning.
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
- Stand, bend, kneel, and climb for extended periods.
- Operate and maneuver tools, equipment, and machinery necessary for horticultural and maintenance tasks.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or a related field.
- Minimum of three years of experience designing and installing plant beds.
- Strong knowledge of plant identification, maintenance practices, and landscape design.
- Ability to obtain and maintain an Illinois Pesticide Operator’s License within six months of hire.
- Valid Illinois driver’s license required.
- A team-oriented mindset with excellent organizational and communication skills.

Salary range: $50,000-$60,000/year
