Horticulture Maintenance 2 – Arborist

The Horticulture Maintenance 2 - Arborist plays a vital role in caring for and maintaining our beautiful trees and other woody plants across all District-owned properties. This position typically follows a Monday through Friday schedule, with 40 hours each week, and the specific work hours are set by the Superintendent of Parks. Occasionally, evening and/or weekend hours may be necessary, and this position also requires being on call whenever needed to ensure our green spaces thrive!

Your Day-To-Day Will Involve:  
  • Directly responsible to the Horticulture Manager in carrying out park maintenance duties.
  • Removal of snow from ice rinks, Park District sidewalks, pathways, and drives.
  • Make and maintain ice rinks, including flooding, putting out rubber belting, and snow removal.
  • Strong knowledge of forestry practices such as tree planting, pruning, maintenance, and removal. 
  • Strong knowledge of mowing practices, including the use of tractors, zero-turn, and walk behind machines, as well as hand equipment. 
  • Strong knowledge of turf health and maintenance, establishing new turf, fertilizing, and weed control.
  • Strong experience with general landscape practices, including landscape design, weed control, annual and perennial beds, and mulching.
  • General knowledge of earthwork work, including grading, material removal, and operation of large specialty equipment.
  • Perform inspections of turf field work, turf field playability. 
  • Additional job duties as assigned, which may be considered essential.
Education, Experience and Training:
  • Knowledgeable in the areas of forestry and general landscape maintenance procedures
  • High school graduate or general education degree required
  • Five (5) years in the landscape maintenance and/or landscape construction fields or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training required
  • Formal or trade school studies related to arboriculture maintenance practices desired
  • Valid State of Illinois driver's license required
  • Certification through the International Society of Arborists (ISA), Illinois Pesticide License, CDL Class B, CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications required within twelve months of employment
Duties and Lines of Responsibility:
  • Formal or trade school studies related to arboriculture maintenance practices are desired
  • Assist with the management of contractual work that pertains to the scope of the position
  • Manage and train the arborist team staff
  • Identify safety hazards, insects, pests, and diseases within trees and woody plant material
  • Operation of chainsaws, woodchippers, and bucket trucks (rigging equipment)
  • Assist with snow removal operations and ice rink maintenance
  • Other duties assigned may include, but are not limited to:
    • General Park landscape maintenance, landscape bed weed control, grading, and irrigation equipment
