PARK MAINTENANCE 1

Pay scale:
Non-Exempt Hourly Position range for this position is $18 – $21 based on qualifications.

Job duty summary:
Under the supervision of Park Manager, the Park Maintenance 1 position performs semi-skilled to skilled work in the maintenance and upkeep of the public parks, grounds, buildings, athletic fields, related facilities and equipment. Duties include mowing, weed eating, trimming, and mulching park grounds. Duties also include the unaided operation of vehicles and equipment to perform a variety of maintenance related tasks.

Supervision exercised:
Although this position does not directly supervise anyone, it may oversee work performed by seasonal laborers.

Essential job functions:
  • Assists in maintaining over 145 acres of park land, buildings, and equipment.
  • Performs daily park inspections.
  • Cuts grass with commercial riding mowers; ability to trailer equipment to various park locations.
  • Picks up trash and other debris including collection and disposal of refuse at park areas.
  • Maintain restrooms and picnic areas.
  • Responsible for setting up and cleaning up recreational program, park events and party rentals.
  • Maintains baseball and soccer fields.
  • Performs building maintenance and repairs including, but not limited to, assistance with roofing, window installation, dry-walling, basic plumbing, and general carpentry.
  • Trims tree’s up to 40-ft. employing all safety guidelines.
  • Performs various concrete projects including, but not limited to, swing set installation, exercise pads,
  • Operates small and large equipment and vehicles including but not limited to, lawn mowers, chain saws, rakes, blowers, sprayers, hand saws, automobiles, pick-up trucks, dump trucks, and office equipment.
  • Perform floor care procedures (scrubber, buffer, and other floor machines).
Additional duties and responsibilities:
  • Performs various special projects as assigned.
  • Assists with snow removal and ice control.
  • Requires working some evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Any other duties assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 18 years old or older.
  • High school diploma or GED required. 
  • One to two years of experience in grounds maintenance or a related field.
  • A valid Illinois Class D Driver’s License is required at the time of hire.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certification must be obtained within six months of hire.
  • Exhibits versatility, flexibility, and initiative to deal with changing assignments.
  • Pesticide Operator License (Turf, Right of Way, Ornamental).
  • All full-time employees must pass a criminal background check, drug test, and physical exam, which the Hickory Hills Park District will cover.
Considerations:
  • Environmental: Works outdoors 80% of the time, exposure to extreme cold, heat, rain, snow etc. and use of PPE is required
  • Psychological and physiological: Work with public, minimal supervision and exposure to chemicals
  • Cognitive: Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions. Flexible with work schedule
Work hours:
Traditional Work Hours 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Rotating weekend coverage is required.
