Turf Maintenance Specialist
JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for assisting the Parks Maintenance Crew Leader in the care and health of all district turf areas including the mowing of all parks, facilities, athletic fields and medians to ensure that these district resources are aesthetically pleasing condition and are available to meet the diverse needs for active and passive recreation.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Assists in ensuring work assignments run smoothly and in an efficient manner.
- Assists in the training of Turf Maintenance Laborers on safety rules and regulations, equipment operation, equipment maintenance and proper mowing procedures in accordance with District procedures.
- Make sure Turf Maintenance Section Staff are operating tools and equipment in safe manner using safety equipment at all times.
- Monitors condition of turf areas, including all facilities and athletic fields and reports the presence of diseases and pests.
- Performs mowing work as a team member.
- Operates trucks and special equipment as required after receiving and passing district training on vehicles/equipment.
- Performs the job safely and in compliance with district policies, procedures, work and safety rules.
- Be familiar with the safe operation of any equipment necessary in accomplishing required tasks.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
- Performs mowing work as a team member.
- Represents the park district with other agencies and organizations as needed.
- Performs other duties as necessary.
- Assist other parts of the organization as needed.
- Assists in soliciting internal and external customer feedback to improve efficiency and customer satisfaction.
- Assists in ensuring work assignments run smoothly and in an efficient manner.
- Other duties as assigned
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
- Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.
- Exposures to chemicals, hazardous voltage, dust, fumes and loud noises.
- Exposure to heights and confined spaces.
- Physical agility to maintain mobility from site to site.
- Manual dexterity required for frequent manipulation of trade tools.
- Subject to modified/flexible work schedule.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to use assistance, mechanical or team lift, for material over 50 pounds.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Efficiently and safely operates large riding mowers (580/328), walk behind mowers and trim/push mowers.
- Knowledge of all aspects of plant material, plant installation and maintenance, turf maintenance and irrigation.
- Knowledge of, but not limited to, the identification of native and non-native grasses.
- Ability to work in a team-based environment.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Work independently under minimal supervision.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Good knowledge of pertinent safety precautions.
- Ability to maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees.
- Be familiar with irrigation systems.
- Possess or able to obtain a valid Illinois Pesticide Operator's License within six months of the date of hire.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
The above knowledge, skills and abilities may be demonstrated by education or formal training equivalent to a High School Degree plus, two years experience in related positions. Education or formal training beyond high school in plant care is preferred. Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the above.
