QUALIFICATIONS: Education: High School diploma or equivalent (GED). Prefer Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in agronomy, horticulture, landscaping, turf management or related field.
Experience: Prefer at least two years landscape maintenance experience of parks and grounds. Prior supervisory experience of grounds crew staff desirable, but not required.
Certifications: Must possess a valid Illinois Drivers’ License and be able to obtain within six months of employment a Class “B” C.D.L. (Commercial Drivers’ License). Must possess or be able to obtain within six (6) months of employment an Illinois Pesticide Operator or Applicator License. Must be able to obtain and keep current CPR and AED certification.
Other Qualifications: Must possess strong interpersonal, leadership, organizational and communication skills and be able to communicate using the English language. Prior supervisory experience is a plus. Must be able to lift 50 pounds and pass a pre-employment physical, drug test, Illinois Drivers’ License record check and criminal background check.
DUTIES: This position is responsible for skilled and semi-skilled grounds maintenance tasks and responsible for the appearance of assigned outdoor areas that may include parks, facility grounds or athletic field grounds. Leads and works on a mowing crew and acts as a crew leader of assigned seasonal staff. Takes pride in maintaining assigned grounds to a high standard. Maintains records and inspection reports. Safely operates small to heavy equipment including string trimmers, push and riding mowers, chain saws, tractors and trucks. As requested, assists the Athletic Field Specialist in maintaining ball fields and soccer fields including layout, lining, grading and detailing. May perform trash collection at park sites, painting and other park maintenance duties as assigned that may include weeding and watering. Assists with special event set-up and break-down. Works on a rotational snow removal crew performing shoveling, snow plowing, salting of walkways and parking lots and other snow removal duties as assigned. This position works outdoors, year-round and is exposed to extreme climate temperatures and conditions including severe cold, ice, snow, rain, heat and humidity. HOURS: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This is a year-round, full-time position. Depending on the needs of the District, may be required to work other days and times.
