The Village of Hawthorn Woods Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a summer Parks and Recreation Intern. The Intern is a part-time seasonal position that reports to the Director of Community Engagement. The Intern will assist with the planning and coordination of summer camps and special events such as Fourth of July festivities, Concerts in the Park and Movies in the Park. They will also assist in areas including aquatics, registration, and park operations and maintenance.

The Parks & Recreation Intern will be exposed to various areas of recreation management that will be beneficial to their future career as a Park & Recreation professional. The Parks & Recreation Intern will work closely with both the Director of Community Engagement and the Director of Parks and Recreation to expand their understanding of the field.

Candidates must 18 years of age by May 1, 2023. CPR/First Aid certification is a plus; or applicant must be willing to obtain. Applicants will be required to successfully pass a background check and drug test prior to employment. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Must be a student in good academic standing and is preferably enrolled in a college undergraduate or graduate program, or be a recent college graduate. Preference is given to students majoring in the field of Parks & Recreation Administration or related field. The ideal candidate will be comfortable public speaking, interacting will community members, instructing staff, and leading activities. Must work well and communicate with people of all ages, especially children.

Certification as a Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) or Park and Recreation Executive (CPRE) is highly desirable. A combination of related education and experience that demonstrates the candidate’s knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties of the position may be considered.

The salary range for this position is $91,758 - $124,143, dependent upon experience and qualifications. Position Summary: Under the direction of the Trades Manager, the Trades Maintenance I shall carry out general maintenance tasks and minor repairs to all Park District facilities. This position requires basic to moderate knowledge of general building, which includes basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and HVAC maintenance. Work will include evenings and weekends when needed as well as assisting with special events, along with other Parks Department duties as assigned. Overtime will be required as needed. The Trades Maintenance I position is in the Parks Department and is a full-time, full-benefited, non-exempt position.

Minimum Requirements: High school graduate; knowledge of swimming pool maintenance helpful, but not required 1-3 years working experience in the construction and/or trades maintenance; knowledge of general building maintenance, such as repairing windows, doors and door hardware, plumbing, electrical and carpentry; be able to operate basic hand and power tools; valid State of Illinois Driver's License CDL Class B is required within twelve (12) months of employment; and Certified Pool Operator Certificate is required within twelve (12) months of employment.
