The Mokena Community Park District is seeking an outgoing and enthusiastic intern. As an intern, you will be given the opportunity to learn various aspects of the Recreation Department along with hands-on experience in the fitness center, parks and maintenance, finance department, and marketing. 

We are looking for interns for Summer 2024 and Fall 2024. 
 
The Mokena Community Park District owns 256 acres of property, serves a region of over 20 square miles, and provides recreational services to a population of approximately 23,000 people. We have a recreation center, program center, splash park, dog park, disc golf course, and 21 park sites.

Skills/Education: 
-Must be currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in recreation, leisure studies, or a related field
-Ability to deal with problems, and follow directions 
-Organized and managed time effectively
-Able to maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees, participants, and the public
-Strong problem-solving and communication skills
-Knowledge and ability to assist in planning, organizing or creating recreation programs and events 

Job Duties:
-Supervise, plan, and evaluate programs, camps and events 
-Assist in each department: Recreation, Parks, Finance, Fitness, and Administration 
-Submit reports to the Superintendent and college/university as requested
-Assist in marketing and preparing the seasonal brochure
-Assists with program registrations and fitness center memberships
-Works all special events during the internship
-Perform other duties as assigned

Job Requirements: 
-CPR/AED Certified or obtain certification within 30 days
-Valid driver's license and provide own transportation
-Some evening and weekend work required 
-Must pass a background check

Job Duties Essential Functions:
  1. Will be responsible for compiling a complete inventory of all parks in the community.
  2. Will be the main point of contact for Men’s Summer Softball league. Attends to the weekly operational needs and statistical updates of softball league. Provides weekly updates to all teams and manages needs as they arise, including stocking first aid kits, ordering softballs and managing game protests.
  3. Assists in collection of sponsorships and donations for the department.
  4. Attends to the daily operational needs the Parks & Rec department, including multiple daily trips to locations for supplies and program evaluations, photos etc.
  5. Works ALL special events, including Memorial Day Procession, Unplug & Play, Lunch on the Lawn, Movies in the Park, Pool Special Events, July 4th, etc.
  6. Assists with program registrations and pass sales, including periods of intensive computer processing with custom registration system.
  7. Weekly visits to programs held at local parks, ensuring program quality. Programs are held at various locations.
  8. Assists with production of the seasonal program brochure and editing.
  9. Assists in management of social media marketing, specifically Facebook and Instagram.
  10. Performs any additional errands or duties as related to department needs. This may include purchasing candy or bottled water for July 4th, printer ink for the pool, organizing storage spaces, etc.

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: Under the supervision and direction of the Superintendent of Recreation, the Recreation Intern will assist the Recreation Supervisors in the planning, organization, and supervision of specific assigned recreation programs and facilities. The Recreation Intern shall act as a general assistant to the Superintendent of Recreation and/or Recreation Supervisors.
 
COGNITIVE SKILLS REQUIRED:
· Ability to deal with problems.
· Ability to interpret rules and follow directions.
· Ability to make decisions in the best interest of the program and the Park District.
· Ability to  supervise program patrons.
· Ability to stay organized and manage time effectively.
 
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIRED:
· Possess a basic knowledge of the theory and philosophy of Recreation.
· Knowledge and ability to assist in planning, organizing or creating recreation programs and events.
 
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
· College student studying the field of recreation or other allied field.  Internship may be used for course credit if applicable to Intern’s curriculum. Non-credit seeking Interns will also be considered.
· Prior field work, part time experience in the area of recreation or related experience is preferred
· CPR/AED certified, or ability to achieve within 30 days of hire
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (DUTIES):
· Assist in the administration of Recreation programs and events as assigned.
· Submit reports to the Superintendent of Recreation, Recreation Supervisors and college/university as requested or required.
· Maintain good relationships with community, other interest groups and agencies serving the area.
· Work with other departments as assigned.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
 
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
· Drive to various sites and facilities.
· Adheres to all policies and procedures outlined in the Safety Manual and Policy and Procedures Manual.
 
OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS:
· Evening, weekend, and holiday work required.
